Wike Laments Nigeria’s World Cup Absence, Urges Yobo To Deliver Nigerians’ Message To Eagles

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has expressed deep disappointment over Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, urging former Super Eagles captain Joseph Yobo to convey the frustrations of millions of football-loving Nigerians to the national team.

Speaking in Abuja, Wike said the country’s absence from football’s biggest tournament had left many supporters disheartened, stressing that the Super Eagles owed Nigerians a stronger showing in future qualification campaigns.

Football, according to the minister, remains one of the few institutions capable of uniting Nigerians across ethnic, religious and political divides. He noted that whenever the national team performs well on the international stage, the country experiences a rare sense of collective pride and unity.

Addressing Yobo directly, Wike urged the former defender to ensure that both the players and technical crew understood the depth of disappointment felt by supporters across the nation.

“Nigerians love football passionately and expect the Super Eagles to be present at major tournaments, especially the World Cup,” Wike said. “Our absence is painful for millions of fans who always stand behind the team.”

Despite his criticism, the minister expressed confidence in the ability of the Super Eagles to recover from the setback and return to the summit of African football.

Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup means the three-time African champions will miss back-to-back editions of the tournament after also failing to reach the 2022 finals in Qatar. The development has intensified calls for reforms within Nigerian football, with supporters demanding improved planning, player development and technical leadership.

Wike, however, remains optimistic that lessons from the disappointing campaign can help the national team rebuild and secure qualification for future global competitions.
