Netflix has cancelled its sci-fi series ‘The Boroughs’ despite the show topping Nielsen’s streaming chart with 1.74 billion viewing minutes during its first full week of release.

Produced by the Duffer Brothers, creators of ‘Stranger Things’, the series ranked No. 1 for the week of May 25, marking a 45 per cent increase from the previous week when it placed second behind Netflix’s ‘Nemesis’. However, the streaming platform reportedly decided against renewing the show for a second season, citing low audience retention and high production costs.

The decision has drawn criticism from fans and cast members, including Geena Davis and Denis O’Hare.

Created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, ‘The Boroughs’ starred Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Denis O’Hare, Alfre Woodard, Clarke Peters and Jena Malone. The series followed a group of friends living in a retirement community who uncovered a dark conspiracy threatening their community.

Nielsen data showed the show resonated most with older viewers, particularly those aged 50 to 64, although interest among younger audiences also grew over time.

Other strong performers on the streaming chart included ‘Spider-Noir’, ‘Dutton Ranch’, ‘Your Friends and Neighbours’ and Hulu’s ‘The Testaments’, which has already been renewed for a second season.
