At least three people were injured after two passenger trains collided in Poland on Thursday evening, causing carriages to derail and disrupting rail services on a major route.
The accident occurred at about 6 p.m. local time near a railway station when an Intercity passenger train and a local Polregio service crashed into each other.
Authorities said a carriage derailed on impact, prompting a large-scale emergency response. Approximately 200 passengers were travelling on both trains at the time of the collision.
Speaking to local media, police officer Martin Halasz confirmed that three people sustained injuries in the crash.
“Three people were injured in the collision,” Halasz said.
More than a dozen fire brigades were deployed to the scene as emergency personnel worked to assist passengers and assess the extent of the damage.
A spokesperson for rail operations said the last carriage of the Intercity train derailed alongside “part of the Polregio train’s electric multiple unit.”
The spokesperson disclosed that the injured passengers suffered bruises and dislocations.
“These people were provided with first aid on site,” he told TVN24.
He added that arrangements were being made to transport stranded passengers to their destinations.
According to the spokesperson, technical teams were immediately dispatched to the scene while investigations into the cause of the accident commenced.
“The commission will investigate the causes of the incident,” he said.
Following the collision, rail traffic on the Piła–Bydgoszcz railway line was suspended.
Authorities said train services would resume only after investigators determine whether the incident caused derailment-related damage or affected railway infrastructure.
The latest accident comes weeks after a fatal train collision in Germany, where two freight trains crashed near Munich, causing several carriages to plunge off a bridge.
One person who was critically injured in the German crash later died in hospital from injuries sustained in the accident.
