The first lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called for greater investment in drug abuse prevention, stressing that education, awareness, family support and community engagement remained the most effective ways to tackle substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking.

In a message to commemorate the 2026 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking yesterday, the first lady urged governments, families, schools, faith-based organisations and civil society groups to strengthen collaboration in protecting children and young people from the dangers of drug abuse.

She noted that this year’s global theme, “The evidence is clear: invest in prevention. Break the cycle. #StopOrganizedCrime,” underscored the importance of preventive measures in addressing substance abuse and dismantling criminal networks.

According to her, prevention remains one of the most effective tools for confronting the growing challenge of substance abuse and organised crime.

“I call on governments, families, schools, faith-based organizations, and civil society to strengthen their collective commitment to creating safe, inclusive, and supportive environments where every child and young person can thrive, realize their full potential, and contribute meaningfully to society through sustained advocacy, care, and support systems,” she said.
