The Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, has charged personnel of the Nigerian Navy to remain law-abiding, respect human rights and strengthen civil-military relations through constructive engagement with civilians and other stakeholders.

Vice Admiral Abbas gave the charge on Saturday during the Nigerian Navy’s second-quarter route march held at the Naval Base, Asokoro, Abuja.

The CNS represented by the Chief of Communications and Information Technology at Naval Headquarters, Rear Admiral Samiu Adepegba, said the Navy would continue to discharge its constitutional responsibilities in collaboration with other security agencies to enhance national security.

He stressed the importance of professionalism and respect for citizens in the discharge of duties.

“I enjoin you all to keep the flag flying by diligently performing your duties while maintaining the utmost regard for human rights.

“I urge you to continue to be law-abiding citizens and, at the same time, maintain cordial and improved relationships with our civilian populace and other stakeholders,” he said.

According to him, the Armed Forces can only effectively fulfil their mandate when they enjoy the trust and cooperation of the people.

“Your duty to defend the territorial integrity of our fatherland will be meaningless if the Nigerian populace is not enjoying a harmonious relationship with the Armed Forces,” Abbas added.

The CNS explained that the route march was organised to enhance the physical fitness, mental alertness, and operational readiness of personnel in response to the evolving nature of contemporary security challenges.

He noted that the exercise also promotes teamwork and esprit de corps among personnel and strengthens collaboration with other security agencies.

“The Nigerian Navy is primarily responsible for protecting the nation’s maritime domain and remains a key contributor to the Gulf of Guinea maritime security architecture. The Service is also actively involved in internal security operations across the country, making it imperative for personnel to remain mentally and physically fit at all times,” he said.

Abbas stated that regular physical training remains the foundation of operational effectiveness, both at sea and on land.

He said the Navy’s sustained investment in physical and mental fitness had contributed significantly to its performance in safeguarding national security and supporting peace and prosperity.

The Naval Chief added that the route march and other fitness exercises have been retained in the Navy’s annual schedule to ensure personnel remain combat-ready and capable of meeting operational demands.

He further urged officers and ratings to maintain the highest standards of professionalism and avoid actions that could tarnish the image of the Service.

“I encourage you not to engage in any act that could bring the Service into disrepute in the course of your duties. The Nigerian Navy will continue to support you by providing the resources required for optimal performance in your assigned tasks,” he said.

Abbas also charged personnel to remain dedicated to duty and unwavering in their support for democracy and constituted authority.
