US Security Chief Celebrates Iran’s World Cup Exit With ‘Happy Dance’

The United States’ head of homeland security has openly celebrated Iran’s elimination from the World Cup, admitting he performed a “happy dance” when the team’s tournament hopes were dashed.

Secretary Markwayne Mullin, who was confirmed as Kristi Noem’s successor in March, made the candid remarks to reporters on Monday, just hours after Iran’s fate was sealed by results elsewhere in the competition.
Iran’s World Cup campaign ended in heartbreak on Sunday when Algeria and Austria played out a dramatic 3-3 draw, confirming that Iran would not progress as one of the eight best third-placed teams. The Iranian side had earlier held Egypt to a 1-1 draw on Saturday, but their goal difference proved insufficient for qualification.
The elimination came after a tournament marked by significant political tension and unprecedented travel restrictions imposed on the Iranian squad. The team’s training base was relocated from Arizona to Tijuana, Mexico, before the World Cup began, and they faced constant movement limitations throughout their participation.
Speaking with visible satisfaction, Secretary Mullin told journalists: “I’m just glad they’re done, and they’re not coming back. I was so happy when we were able to pull their visas and said they could leave the US soil, and I might’ve sung a song or two or maybe even danced a happy dance.”
The Homeland Security chief emphasised the administrative burden placed on his department by the Iranian team’s presence, stating: “There wasn’t a single team that we had to spend more time dealing with than Iran.”
Under the strict terms of their visas, Iran’s players and coaching staff were only permitted to enter the United States the day before their first two matches. They were required to depart US soil on the same day as the games, effectively limiting their preparation time and creating what coach Amir Ghalenoei described as impossible conditions.
For their final group stage match in Seattle, the restrictions were slightly eased, allowing the team to arrive two days early. However, they were still compelled to return to their Tijuana base immediately following Saturday’s match against Egypt.
Iranian coach Ghalenoei did not hold back in his criticism of the US government’s approach, describing his team as the “most oppressed” at the tournament. The coach highlighted the broader geopolitical context, with his country currently engaged in conflict with both the United States and Israel.
“The United States has treated us very unfairly,” Ghalenoei stated. He revealed that his squad had been given “less than half” the training preparation window they needed, severely hampering their ability to compete effectively on the world stage.
Iran captain Mehdi Taremi echoed his coach’s sentiments, expressing frustration that political tensions had intruded upon the sporting spectacle. “This kind of tension undermines the joy of the World Cup,” Taremi said. “I felt the tension from the first moment we arrived.”
The Iranian team’s brief tournament run ended with a single point from their three group matches. Their elimination was ultimately confirmed when they missed out on the third-place qualifying spots by a single goal difference, with Egypt and Algeria progressing instead.
Iran’s narrow failure came despite a dramatic late winner against Egypt being disallowed by the video assistant referee for a marginal offside call in stoppage time. Had the goal stood, Iran would have secured victory and likely advanced to the knockout stages.
The decision to impose such stringent travel conditions on the Iranian delegation drew criticism from human rights organizations and some international football bodies, who argued that the restrictions compromised the integrity of the competition and unfairly disadvantaged the team.
The World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, was already facing scrutiny over hosting arrangements, with Iran’s treatment becoming a focal point of broader concerns about political interference in the tournament.
Secretary Mullin’s celebratory comments are likely to intensify international criticism, with observers noting that a senior US official’s public jubilation at a team’s elimination—based on political rather than sporting considerations—risks undermining the World Cup’s principle of separating sport from politics.
Iran’s federation has not yet commented on whether they will formally protest the treatment they received, but sources close to the team suggest they are considering filing a complaint with FIFA over what they view as discriminatory treatment.
As the World Cup continues, the controversy surrounding Iran’s participation and elimination serves as a stark reminder of the complex intersection between international sport and geopolitics, with the United States’ handling of the Iranian delegation likely to be debated long after the tournament concludes.
