Pope Leo has appointed two Nigerian Catholic leaders to key roles in the Vatican’s Dicastery for Evangelization, elevating Nigeria’s profile within the global Catholic Church and strengthening its representation in one of the Holy See’s most influential departments. According to Fides News Agency, Archbishop Alfred Adewale Martins of the Archdiocese of Lagos was named a member of the Dicastery for Evangelization, the Vatican department responsible for coordinating missionary activities worldwide and supporting the establishment and growth of Catholic communities. Father Wenceslaus Madu, Vice-Chancellor of the Claretian University of Nigeria in Nekede, Imo State, was also appointed as a consultor to the Dicastery, where he will provide expert guidance on evangelisation, missionary work and church development. The appointments were announced alongside those of other African Catholic leaders, including Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo Besungu, Archbishop of Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Archbishop Andrew Nkea Fuanya of Bamenda, Cameroon, who were appointed members of the Dicastery. Archbishop François Sylla of Conakry, Guinea, was named a consultor. The Dicastery for Evangelization is one of the Vatican’s principal departments, overseeing the Catholic Church’s missionary mission across the world, particularly in territories where the faith is expanding. It also coordinates efforts to establish and strengthen new local churches. The appointments of Archbishop Martins and Father Madu are widely regarded as a significant recognition of the Nigerian Catholic Church’s growing influence and contribution to the church’s global evangelisation mission, giving both clerics an opportunity to help shape the Vatican’s missionary policies and outreach initiatives.
