President Bola Tinubu has disclosed that six million more Nigerians have been enrolled in the health insurance scheme since he assumed office, saying the milestone reflected his administration’s commitment to ensuring that every Nigerian has access to quality healthcare, regardless of where they live or how much they earn.
The President made the disclosure in a post on his official X handle, where he highlighted the achievements recorded under his administration’s healthcare reforms.
He said the gains formed part of what he described as one of the most ambitious and comprehensive transformations of Nigeria’s health sector in decades, being implemented through the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare under the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative (NHSRII).
Highlighting progress recorded so far, Tinubu said his administration was revitalising Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs), expanding health insurance coverage, protecting millions of children through immunisation, strengthening the country’s health workforce, upgrading specialist hospitals, improving maternal and child healthcare, and positioning Nigeria to become a hub for pharmaceutical manufacturing and healthcare investment.
According to the President, the reforms were already yielding tangible results.
He said 4,161 Primary Healthcare Centres are currently under revitalisation, with work completed on 3,158 of them, while 14,283 PHCs—representing more than half of all Primary Healthcare Centres in Nigeria—are now functional.
Tinubu also said more than 102 million children have been vaccinated against measles and rubella, while 17.1 million girls have been protected against cervical cancer through the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine.
He further disclosed that 78,054 frontline health workers have been trained across the country, while 20,000 health professionals have been recruited into federal tertiary hospitals to strengthen healthcare delivery.
The President added that his administration has delivered 503 health infrastructure projects nationwide and is developing three world-class cancer centres to improve access to specialised treatment.
He said the ongoing reforms are designed not only to save lives today but also to build a stronger and more resilient healthcare system for generations to come.
Tinubu urged Nigerians to read the Nigeria Health Sector Impact Report, which, according to him, highlighted some of the major milestones recorded so far under the NHSRII.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to the Renewed Hope Agenda, the President said building a healthier Nigeria remains central to his government’s development priorities.
“We are building a healthier, stronger and more prosperous nation, one reform, one community and one life at a time,” he said.
Tinubu assured Nigerians that the reforms would continue, expressing confidence that “the best days of Nigerian healthcare are still ahead of us.”
