HOW I OVERCAME: Kaduna Butcher: From Throwing Away Meat To Building Prosperity

For years, every market day ended with anxiety for many butchers in Kaduna State.

As the sun went down, they faced a painful choice: sell fresh meat at giveaway prices or watch it spoil before morning. Without cold storage facilities, unsold meat quickly became a financial loss. The money spent on buying livestock, transporting it and processing it often disappeared overnight.

“It was heartbreaking,” many traders recalled. “We worked hard all day only to throw away what we couldn’t sell.”

That cycle of waste trapped many butchers in poverty. Profits were uncertain, families struggled to make ends meet, and expanding their businesses remained a distant dream.

Today, the story is changing.

At the upgraded Zango Shanu Modern Abattoir in Sabon Gari local government area, modern cold-chain facilities, including cold rooms, deep freezers and hygienic meat shops, have transformed how meat is processed, stored and sold.

According to the Sabon Gari Branch of the Butchers Association of Nigeria, the new facilities have drastically reduced post-slaughter losses. Instead of rushing to dispose of unsold meat before it spoils, traders can now preserve their products safely and sell them later without compromising quality.

Meanwhile, the association of Nigeria has commended Governor Sani for upgrading the Zango Shanu Modern Abattoir .

The butchers participated in a media tour, facilitated by the commissioner of Information and Culture, Malam Ahmed Maiyaki, during which journalists inspected some projects in zone one.

On behalf of the association, Alkasim Mai-Nama noted that Governor Sani has transformed meat preservation and marketing by installing modern equipment, including cold-chain facilities, in abattoirs across the three senatorial districts.

He noted that the governor’s intervention has enhanced food safety and hygiene, reduced post-slaughter losses and significantly increased butchers’ earnings.

Mai-Nama recalled that the lack of storage facilities in the past forced butchers to dispose of unsold meat, resulting in heavy financial losses.

The Sarkin Fawan Badawa, Musa Dalhat Abubakar, said the construction of a perimeter fence has strengthened security and safeguarded the investments of butchers and livestock traders.

“For over 30 years, the abattoir remained exposed to encroachment and theft because there was no fence. Today, our businesses are more secure, and the improved infrastructure has attracted butchers and livestock traders from neighbouring Katsina and Zamfara states, expanding commercial activities and boosting the local economy,” he stated.

The improvement has translated into higher incomes and greater financial stability for many families that depend on the meat business.

Security has also improved. For more than three decades, the abattoir operated without a perimeter fence, leaving traders vulnerable to theft and encroachment. Today, the fenced facility provides a safer environment for business, giving butchers confidence that their investments are protected.

The improved infrastructure is also attracting livestock traders and butchers from neighbouring Katsina and Zamfara states, creating a busier marketplace and stimulating the local economy.

For many Kaduna butchers, the transformation goes beyond new buildings and equipment. It means fewer losses, better earnings, renewed hope and the dignity of knowing that a day’s hard work no longer ends in waste.

What was once a daily struggle for survival is gradually becoming a story of resilience, opportunity and a brighter future for hundreds of families whose livelihoods depend on the meat trade.
