Plateau State governor, Barr. Caleb Mutfwang, has approved the procurement of fertilisers for the 2026 farming season as part of his administration’s unwavering commitment to agricultural transformation, food security and the economic empowerment of farmers across the state.

LEADERSHIP reports that to ensure farmers have timely access to quality farm inputs at affordable prices, the governor approved a substantial subsidy on fertilisers, making a 50kg bag available at N20,000, against the prevailing price of between N50,000 and N53,000.

The subsidy takes effect immediately, enabling farmers to access the input without delay as the planting season gathers momentum.

Governor Mutfwang disclosed that the Plateau State Government has procured approximately 500 truckloads of fertiliser for distribution to farmers across the state’s 17 Local Government Areas.

The intervention is designed to reduce the high cost of agricultural production, enhance farmers’ productivity, and strengthen food security throughout Plateau State.

According to the Governor, agriculture remains a major pillar of his administration’s development agenda and a critical driver of economic growth, employment, and rural development.

He explained that the fertiliser subsidy is a direct response to the concerns consistently raised by farmers over the rising cost of farming inputs and reflects the government’s determination to make agriculture more productive, profitable, and sustainable.

Governor Mutfwang noted that the intervention aligns with the broader agricultural development objectives of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Federal Government under the Renewed Hope Agenda and complements ongoing efforts to cushion the effects of economic hardship while increasing food production nationwide.

While the official flag-off of the 2026 Fertiliser Subsidy Programme is scheduled for Friday, 10 July 2026, the Governor has directed that the sale of the subsidised fertilisers commence immediately to ensure farmers take full advantage of the current planting season.

The Governor expressed confidence that the initiative will significantly reduce production costs, improve crop yields, increase farmers’ profit margins, and contribute meaningfully to the state’s drive towards achieving food sufficiency and sustainable agricultural development.

Governor Mutfwang, therefore, calls on farmers across Plateau State to take full advantage of the subsidy programme and assures them of his administration’s continued commitment to implementing policies and programmes that support agricultural productivity, improve rural livelihoods, and position Plateau State as Nigeria’s leading hub for agriculture and agribusiness.
