Ruben Amorim has apologised to Manchester United supporters for not speaking to them since his January dismissal, saying he was “proud” to have been their coach as he was unveiled as AC Milan’s new manager.
The 41-year-old Portuguese, who signed a three-year contract with the Serie A side, had remained silent since leaving Old Trafford after 14 months in charge, opting against any social media statements.
At his unveiling, Amorim acknowledged he made mistakes at United but said those lessons would make him “better” moving forward.
“It is hard to explain the mistakes as I would have to explain all the context of the last adventure,” he said. “I didn’t have the opportunity – and I am sorry for that – to say something to the Manchester United fans at the moment, but I am really proud to have been their coach for a year.”
Amorim, who answered exclusively in English as he does not yet speak Italian, also confirmed he is trying to persuade 40-year-old Luka Modric to extend his contract at Milan.
AC Milan will face United in their final pre-season friendly in Poland on August 15.
