Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA) has urged policyholders affected by recent flooding in parts of Lagos State to promptly notify their insurers and begin the claims process.
Chairperson of the association, Ebelechukwu Nwachukwu, made the appeal in a statement on Thursday in Lagos.
Nwachukwu, who is also the managing director of Rex Insurance, expressed sympathy to individuals, families and businesses affected by the flooding caused by persistent heavy rainfall in recent days.
She said the association stood in solidarity with victims who suffered losses involving lives, homes, vehicles, businesses and other valuable assets.
The NIA chairperson stressed the need for improved environmental sanitation, responsible waste disposal and regular clearing of drainage channels to reduce the risk of flooding.
She, however, noted that natural disasters could occur despite preventive efforts, adding that such incidents highlighted the importance of insurance as a financial protection tool for individuals and businesses.
Nwachukwu advised policyholders whose insured properties or businesses were affected by the flooding to immediately contact their insurance companies, brokers or agents to enable proper assessment and processing of claims.
According to her, early notification and submission of relevant supporting documents will facilitate timely assessment and settlement of genuine claims.
“The association assures the public that its member companies remain committed to providing professional support and prompt settlement of all genuine claims in line with the terms and conditions of insurance policies,” she said.
She advised policyholders who require assistance with claims procedures to contact their insurers, insurance brokers, insurance agents, or the NIA for guidance.
Nwachukwu described insurance as a key pillar of economic resilience, enabling individuals, families and businesses to recover faster from unexpected losses.
She said increasing climate-related risks, including flooding, made adequate insurance protection one of the most effective measures against financial disruption.
Nwachukwu reaffirmed the Nigerian insurance industry’s commitment to providing financial relief to policyholders by promptly settling valid insurance claims.
