Nigerian singer and songwriter Augustine Kelechi, better known as Tekno, has shared the real reason behind his prolonged absence from the music scene, revealing that a serious health condition left him unable to perform.

Speaking during an interview with Cool FM, the music star disclosed that he suffered severe vocal cord damage caused by acid reflux, a condition that affected his ability to sing for an extended period.

Tekno said the situation was made even more painful by the assumptions of those around him, explaining that many people—including some close to him—believed he had simply become lazy and no longer wanted to work.

“Even the people closest to me were saying that ‘he is just lazy. He doesn’t want to perform. I was in a very dark place. Even after I recovered, I hated music. I didn’t want to hear music for a long time. I was only forcing myself to do music because I had a deal with Universal,” he said.

The singer explained that, beyond his physical recovery, he also had to overcome the emotional impact of being misunderstood and judged during one of the most difficult periods of his career. He said healing from the stigma attached to his absence took time and intentional effort before he was able to reconnect with music.
