Federal Government Condoles Qatar Over Death Of Former Emir Sheikh Hamad

The federal government has expressed deep sorrow over the death of the Father Amir and former Emir of the State of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, describing him as a visionary leader whose legacy transformed Qatar into a modern global power.

Sheikh Hamad, who ruled Qatar from 1995 to 2013 and was widely credited with driving the country’s rapid economic development and modernisation, died on Sunday, July 12, 2026.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and signed by its spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, Nigeria said the late former Emir’s leadership left a lasting impact not only on Qatar but also on the wider international community.

The ministry noted that Sheikh Hamad played a pivotal role in shaping modern Qatar and elevating the country’s influence on the global stage through visionary leadership and commitment to development.

“His wisdom, dedication to progress, and commitment to international cooperation will be remembered fondly by the people of Qatar, the Gulf countries, and international partners,” the statement said.

On behalf of the federal government and the people of Nigeria, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, extended condolences to the Amir of the State of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Al Thani family, and the people of Qatar.

“On behalf of the Government and people of Nigeria, the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, extends our sincere condolences to His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Amir of the State of Qatar, the Al Thani family, and the brotherly people of Qatar,” the statement added.

The ministry reaffirmed Nigeria’s solidarity with the government and people of Qatar during the period of national mourning, praying for the peaceful repose of the late Father Amir.

It also prayed that Almighty God grant Sheikh Hamad eternal rest in paradise and give his family, the leadership of Qatar, and its people the strength, comfort, and fortitude to bear the loss.
