Sokoto Employs 3,940 Health Workers As Gov Aliyu Hosts UNICEF

Sokoto State Governor, Ahmad Aliyu has said his administration recruited 1,500 nurses and midwives and 2,440 community health extension workers across the state since assumption of office.

The governor stated this when he received UNICEF executive director, Katherine Russell who paid him a visit at Government House Sokoto yesterday.

Represented by his deputy, Idris Muhammad Gobir, Aliyu acknowledged the UNICEF technical and financial support especially through initiatives supported by the European Union.

He added that the partnership have enable Sokoto state developed and implemented strategic policies operational plans and intervention aim at drastically reducing maternal, newborn and infant mortalities as well as preventing childhood illness.

Aliyu stated that, Sokoto State Government in collaboration with UNICEF built child friendly Centres for Almajiri’s and out of School Children at Kalambaina in Kware LGA and Shuni in Dange Shuni among others.

He further said, government Supported 100 of Girl’s to pursue western education through ‘AGILE’ project.

Aliyu expressed gratitude to the leadership of UNICEF in Nigeria and Sokoto field Office for their ongoing efforts in renovating and remodeling of the state health and educational institutions.

The governor adding that UNICEF intervention were critical to reducing child mortality rate and numbers of out of school children in Sokoto in the near future.

He reiterated the administration’s determination towards ensuring stronger collaboration and partnership with UNICEF and other development partners in the overall development of the state.

In her speech, the UNICEF executive director, Catherine Russell commended the community leadership, partnership and commitment of sokoto state during her visit to Rumbukawa Primary Health Centre.

She said UNICEF remain committed to working alongside the federal government, state, communities, development partners and young people themselves to help ensure that every child can survive, thrive, learn and reach their full potentials.
