The Kano State House of Assembly has passed the Kano State Electricity Bill, 2026, paving the way for the establishment of a state electricity regulatory agency and for increased private-sector participation in power generation, transmission, and distribution.

The bill was passed on Wednesday after its recommittal, consideration at the Committee of the Whole, and third reading during plenary presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Ismail Falgore.

Briefing journalists after the plenary, the House Majority Leader, Hon. Lawan Hussaini, said the legislation would empower the Kano State Government to establish an independent electricity regulatory and transmission agency under the Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy.

He explained that the agency would be headed by a Managing Director with a minimum of 10 years’ experience in electrical engineering or the power sector, and supervised by a governing council whose members would serve renewable four-year terms.

According to him, the law, when assented to by Governor Abba Yusuf, will create an enabling environment for local and foreign investors to invest in electricity generation, transmission, distribution and supply across the state.

Hussaini said the measure was expected to reduce the state’s electricity deficit, improve energy access, attract investments and stimulate economic growth.

He added that the legislation aligns with ongoing efforts to decentralise electricity administration and expand access to a reliable power supply in Kano.

Meanwhile, the Assembly also called on the state government to urgently intervene to restore electricity to communities in Madobi Local Government Area following the vandalism of critical power infrastructure.

The resolution followed a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by the member representing Madobi Constituency, Hon. Suleiman Mukhtar.

Mukhtar told the House that suspected vandals took advantage of a recent rainfall to steal electricity cables and other installations, leaving more than eight wards without power.

He said the scale of the destruction was beyond the capacity of the local government and affected communities to address, urging the state government to immediately replace the damaged facilities and strengthen measures to protect electricity infrastructure across the state.
