A 60-year-old man has been found dead in a hotel in Dutse, the Jigawa State capital. He is suspected to have died from an overdose of a manpower-enhancing substance.
The deceased was said to have checked into the hotel room on Tuesday with a 20-year-old lady believed before his sudden death.
At the time of filing this report, the identity of the man had not been known, but unofficial sources said he was a political appointee in the state.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Jigawa State Police Command, SP Lawali Shisu, said the command had commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding a case of sudden and unnatural death reported on Tuesday, 21st July, 2026, at about 12:50 p.m.
Shisu said when the man began gasping for breath, the police received a distress call and officers attached to the Yalwawa Division responded swiftly to the scene. They immediately evacuated him to the General Hospital, Dutse, where he was examined by medical personnel and unfortunately pronounced dead.
According to him, police detectives thereafter secured the scene and conducted a preliminary examination.
During the exercise, some food items, beverages, a suspected sexual enhancement substance and other personal effects were recovered inside the room.
Shisu added that all necessary procedures were observed to preserve relevant exhibits and facilitate a comprehensive investigation.
“The 20-year-old lady who was present at the time of the incident is cooperating with investigators by providing useful information to assist in establishing the sequence of events leading to this unfortunate occurrence. The investigation remains ongoing,” SP Shishu stated.
