Nigerian-American comedian and actor Godfrey has jokingly called for a “Nigerian survival guide” after reflecting on the many cultural rules he has had to learn throughout his life.

Speaking on the One54 Africa Podcast, Godfrey humorously recounted the unwritten codes of Nigerian culture that were constantly reinforced while growing up.

“Can I get a pamphlet on how to be Nigerian?” he quipped, drawing laughter from the hosts.

The comedian recalled being repeatedly corrected for using his left hand to receive items, a gesture considered disrespectful in many Nigerian cultures, particularly when interacting with elders.

He also spoke about being cautioned by his parents against crossing his legs in certain situations, another cultural expectation rooted in showing respect and proper etiquette.

Using the stories to highlight the richness of Nigerian traditions, Godfrey joked that there seemed to be an endless list of rules one was expected to know without ever being formally taught.

His remarks resonated with many Nigerians online, who flooded social media with their own childhood memories of learning similar cultural dos and don’ts from parents and grandparents.
