Group To Boost Indigenous Electric Vehicle Development

Electric Motor Vehicle Company (EMVC), a Nigerian indigenous electric vehicle manufacturer, has signed a landmark partnership agreement with the Federal Polytechnic Offa, Kwara State, to advance local electric vehicle (EV) production, research and skills development in Nigeria.

The collaboration, described as the first of its kind between an indigenous electric vehicle manufacturer and a Nigerian polytechnic, is aimed at strengthening technical education, accelerating innovation and building the skilled workforce required to drive Nigeria’s emerging clean mobility industry.

Under the agreement, both institutions will jointly develop electric vehicles designed for Nigerian and African road conditions, while collaborating on research into battery technology, including cell assembly, battery management systems and the local sourcing of components.

The partnership will also provide structured training programmes for Federal Polytechnic Offa students in electric vehicle design, assembly, battery systems and after-sales maintenance, alongside shared access to laboratories, workshops, technical materials and other research facilities.

Beyond the initial areas of cooperation, EMVC and the Polytechnic plan to establish a joint innovation and research hub, or Centre of Excellence in Electric Mobility, to serve as a platform for cutting-edge research and technological advancement.

Other proposed initiatives include the co-development of curricula and certificate programmes in electric vehicle engineering, battery technology and renewable energy systems, as well as internship, apprenticeship and industrial attachment opportunities for students within EMVC’s engineering and assembly operations.

The collaboration will further promote faculty and technical staff exchange programmes, joint research publications, patent development, entrepreneurship support for student-led innovations, and the deployment of electric vehicle charging infrastructure on the Polytechnic campus for demonstration and applied research.

The two organisations also intend to encourage local fabrication of selected vehicle components through the Polytechnic’s engineering workshops, pursue research grants and development funding, and implement community awareness programmes to promote electric mobility adoption across Kwara State and the North-Central region.

Speaking on the partnership, Chief Executive Officer of EMVC, Prince Mustapha Mona Audu, said the collaboration underscores the company’s commitment to developing a sustainable electric vehicle ecosystem through investment in both manufacturing and human capital.

“This collaboration reflects EMVC’s belief that building a genuine electric vehicle industry in Nigeria requires more than manufacturing capacity; it requires a deliberate investment in people and knowledge. Partnering with Federal Polytechnic Offa allows us to develop vehicles and battery technology suited to our environment while training the next generation of Nigerian engineers and technicians who will sustain this industry long into the future,” he said.

The Rector of the Federal Polytechnic Offa described the partnership as a significant milestone in aligning technical education with the practical demands of Nigeria’s growing clean energy and mobility sector.

According to the Rector, the initiative will expose students to real-world engineering, manufacturing and innovation processes, equipping them with the practical skills needed to thrive in the country’s evolving automotive industry.

EMVC is a Nigerian indigenous company focused on localising the design, assembly and manufacturing of electric vehicles tailored to African conditions. Its operations currently span two- and three-wheel electric vehicles, battery assembly and charging infrastructure, with plans to expand into four-wheel vehicle assembly as part of its broader vision to position Nigeria and Africa as producers of clean mobility technologies.
