Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Carl Ikeme has revealed that his biggest regret in football is not representing Nigeria more often and missing major international tournaments with the national team.

Ikeme, who was forced to retire from professional football after being diagnosed with acute leukaemia, said missing the 2018 FIFA World Cup remains particularly painful.

The former Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper earned 10 caps for Nigeria and was part of the squad during the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

Reflecting on his international career, Ikeme said his inability to represent Nigeria at major tournaments is the one aspect of his football journey he wishes could have been different.

“My regret in my football career is not representing Nigeria more and not going to major competitions with the team,” Ikeme said.

“I should have been at the World Cup, unfortunately we know why I could not make it.

“It has always been that thing in me. I have no regrets about football but that is the only thing that burns me.”

Ikeme had established himself as an important goalkeeper for both Wolves and Nigeria before his career was brought to an abrupt end by his battle with leukaemia.

The goalkeeper was diagnosed with acute leukaemia in July 2017 after returning to Wolverhampton Wanderers for pre-season training.

He subsequently underwent treatment and announced his retirement from professional football in 2018 after doctors confirmed that he was in complete remission.

His illness meant he missed Nigeria’s campaign at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where the Super Eagles were eliminated in the group stage.

Ikeme’s absence also created uncertainty over Nigeria’s goalkeeping position as the national team searched for a long-term replacement between the posts.

For several years, the Super Eagles rotated between different goalkeepers before Stanley Nwabali emerged as a leading option in recent times.

Despite the disappointment of missing out on major tournaments, Ikeme remains highly regarded by Nigerian football supporters for his commitment to the national team and his performances during his international career.

His comments underline the emotional cost of being forced to step away from football at the height of his career, with the former goalkeeper admitting that representing Nigeria at a World Cup remains the one unfulfilled ambition that continues to hurt.

Ikeme’s story has also become one of resilience, having successfully battled leukaemia after retiring from football and subsequently remaining involved in the game in different capacities.
