President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved N46 billion for the resurfacing and reconstruction of the second runway at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA), as part of the federal government’s plan to transform the facility into a world-class aviation hub.

The minister of aviation and aerospace development, Festus Keyamo, disclosed this on Tuesday while commissioning the newly remodelled Muhammadu Adamu Dankabo Domestic Terminal at the airport in Kano.

According to the minister, the investment underscores the federal government’s commitment to modernising aviation infrastructure under the Renewed Hope Agenda and strengthening Kano’s position as the commercial and aviation gateway to Northern Nigeria.

Keyamo said the reconstruction of the second runway would significantly improve operational efficiency, increase flight capacity and enable the airport to compete with leading international airports across Africa and beyond.

“The President has approved the sum of N46 billion for the resurfacing and reconstruction of the second runway so that the Kano Airport can compete with other international airports around the world,” the minister said.

He also disclosed that the upgrade of the airport’s Hajj Terminal is already underway, with contractors currently on site, describing the projects as part of broader efforts to improve passenger experience, safety and service delivery across Nigeria’s airports.

Speaking at the event, the managing director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku said the newly upgraded Muhammadu Adamu Dankabo Domestic Terminal demonstrates FAAN’s commitment to providing modern airport facilities and enhancing travellers’ experience.

Chairman of FAAN’s governing board, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje commended President Tinubu and the aviation minister for prioritising aviation infrastructure in Kano, noting that the ongoing investments would further boost the state’s economy and reinforce its status as Northern Nigeria’s leading commercial centre.

The newly commissioned domestic terminal, named after aviation pioneer Mallam Muhammadu Adamu Dankabo, is expected to improve passenger comfort and operational efficiency while complementing the federal government’s ongoing investments in the airport.
