The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure is set to propel the global semiconductor industry to unprecedented heights this year, with research firm Omdia raising its 2026 semiconductor revenue forecast by 94.1 per cent amid surging demand for AI chips, advanced memory and data centre infrastructure.
The latest forecast underscores how the AI revolution has become the dominant force shaping the semiconductor industry, with cloud providers, hyperscalers and enterprise AI deployments driving record demand for processors and high-bandwidth memory.
According to the research firm, AI-related investments have continued to outpace earlier expectations, prompting another upward revision to its market outlook after previous increases earlier this year.
The report noted that the semiconductor market has entered an unprecedented growth cycle driven primarily by AI infrastructure spending rather than traditional consumer electronics demand.
Omdia’s Senior Principal Analyst, Myson Robles-Bruce, said the industry’s growth is increasingly concentrated around AI applications.
“Semiconductor revenue growth is being driven by highly concentrated, AI-related demand, rather than broad-based consumer behavior or industrial production trends that have historically influenced the market.”
He added, “Without the contributions of memory and logic ICs, overall semiconductor revenue growth would fall dramatically, highlighting the nature of the demand driving recent market surges.”
The report said memory devices—including DRAM and NAND flash—as well as advanced logic chips used in AI accelerators and servers remain the biggest beneficiaries of the spending wave, fuelled by the aggressive expansion plans of global hyperscale cloud providers.
Omdia further noted that computing and data storage are expected to remain the fastest-growing semiconductor segments as enterprises increasingly deploy generative AI workloads requiring significantly higher computing capacity and memory density.
The firm expects the world’s largest cloud companies to collectively invest hundreds of billions of dollars in AI infrastructure this year, providing sustained momentum for semiconductor manufacturers and suppliers across the value chain.
The latest outlook comes amid broader optimism across the chip industry. Recent earnings from major semiconductor companies, including Intel, also point to strengthening AI-driven demand, with the company raising its capital expenditure outlook as orders for AI-related data centre processors continue to grow.
However, earlier this year, it was projected that global semiconductor revenues would exceed the historic $1 trillion mark for the first time in 2026, driven by soaring demand for AI infrastructure, advanced memory technologies and high-performance computing systems.
