Numbers have become the language of excellence for 14-year-old Okpako-Onyokoko Ovie Joel. His remarkable achievement of winning 40 prestigious mathematics awards has not only set him apart among his peers but also established him as one of Nigeria’s brightest young minds. ANAYO ONUKWUGHA highlights the inspiring journey of the teenage mathematics prodigy.

For many students, and even adults, mathematics is a subject to be feared, avoided, or merely endured. But for 14-year-old Okpako-Onyokoko Ovie Joel, numbers come as naturally as words, and complex equations are opportunities rather than obstacles.

An indigene of Isiokolo in the Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State, Ovie has transformed his passion for mathematics into an extraordinary record of achievement, amassing 40 local and international awards from competitions worldwide.

A student of Graceland International School, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, he has distinguished himself not only in Mathematics but also in Science, Coding, and Cybersecurity, earning honours in Nigeria, Europe, North America, and Asia. His latest feat saw him crowned World Champion in the 2026 International STEM Mathematics Olympiad (Grade 11) in Rome, further cementing his place among the world’s brightest young talents.

The competition attracted participants from 54 countries, with Ovie delivering an outstanding performance. He clinched a gold medal in Mathematics, finishing first; won another gold medal in Coding (Codementum), finishing third; and secured a silver medal in CodeCombat.

In 2024, Ovie also showcased his versatility at the STEAM AHEAD (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) competition in Istanbul, Turkey, where he won gold, silver, and bronze medals in Science, Mathematics, and Cybersecurity, respectively. The competition brought together 1,782 participants from 30 countries and territories worldwide.

He was the only Nigerian and African participant to achieve such an impressive feat at the competition. Prior to STEAM AHEAD, Ovie represented Nigeria at the Singapore International Math Olympiad Challenge (SIMOC) in June 2024, where he won a bronze medal in Mathematics, becoming the only Nigerian and African to do so among 2,231 contestants from 32 countries and territories.

In January 2024, Ovie travelled to Ghana for the Minerva International Scholarship Examination (MISE) Mathematics Camp, where he received the Exceptional Performance Award. In April 2026, he and his colleague led the Graceland International School team to victory at the National Mathematics Tournament at Eko Hotels, Lagos, defeating several schools across Nigeria to become overall champions.

Also in 2024, Ovie competed in the Scholastic Mathematics Competition in Rivers State, Nigeria, further adding to his growing list of academic achievements.

In 2024, while in Grade 9, Okpako-Onyokoko Ovie Joel took part in the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN) Science Competition in Abuja, where he emerged as the overall first in his grade nationwide.
