AC Milan have opened preliminary talks with Arsenal over the availability of teenage midfielder Ethan Nwaneri as the Serie A giants step up their pursuit of one of England’s brightest young talents.
According to TNT Sports, the Rossoneri have identified the 18-year-old as a key transfer target this summer and have already made initial enquiries to establish Arsenal’s stance on a potential deal.
MARCA journalist Matteo Moretto, speaking on Fabrizio Romano’s YouTube channel, said Milan have intensified their interest in the Hale End academy graduate.
“Nwaneri is a name that has emerged strongly in Milan’s recruitment meetings,” Moretto said. “The attacking midfielder has outstanding technical quality and intelligence, which fits the profile Milan are looking for. Contacts have already been established, and the club are now trying to understand the full picture regarding his situation at Arsenal.”
However, Milan are expected to face stiff competition for the England youth international. Bundesliga side RB Leipzig are also keen on the youngster, while Premier League clubs Everton and Fulham are monitoring his situation.
Despite the growing interest, Arsenal are not believed to be under pressure to sell. The Gunners handed Nwaneri a new four-year contract last summer and are understood to be prepared to sanction a permanent transfer only if their valuation is met.
Any agreement would likely include either a buy-back clause or a significant sell-on percentage, allowing Arsenal to retain an interest in the player’s future development.
Reports suggest Arsenal value Nwaneri at around €35 million (£30 million), reflecting the club’s belief in his long-term potential despite his limited senior experience.
Nwaneri spent last season on loan at Marseille, where he found regular first-team opportunities difficult to come by, making 12 Ligue 1 appearances, most of them as a substitute.
For Milan, signing Nwaneri would represent an investment in one of Europe’s most highly rated young attacking midfielders as the club continue to build a squad capable of competing at the highest level in Italy and Europe.
Negotiations remain at an early stage, with Milan assessing whether they can meet Arsenal’s demands amid increasing competition for the teenager’s signature.
