FIFA president Gianni Infantino is facing mounting pressure over his future after the Football Associations of England and Wales withdrew their support for his re-election bid, while reports claim he has sought assistance from the administration of United States President Donald Trump to remain in office.

The latest setback comes days after Infantino abandoned the controversial FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) proposal, which would have created a commercial entity capable of selling stakes in the FIFA World Cup to private investors. The plan was withdrawn following fierce opposition from UEFA, other continental confederations and leading clubs.

The Football Association of Wales (FAW), which had previously indicated it would support Infantino’s bid for another term before details of the proposal emerged, confirmed on Monday that it had reversed its position.

In a strongly worded statement, the FAW said: “The recent failures in good governance, processes, leadership, values, stakeholder management, communications and sound judgement have led us to a position where Mr Infantino has lost the confidence of the FAW to remain at the helm of world football.
“Failing to put the best interests of football first is a failure we cannot accept.”

The English Football Association has also formally informed FIFA that it no longer supports Infantino’s re-election campaign.

According to reports, the FA aligned itself with UEFA’s position that confidence in the FIFA president had been severely undermined by the handling of the failed FFE proposal.

Meanwhile, the New York Post reported that Infantino has turned to the Trump administration as he battles to retain his position at the head of world football.

The report claims the 56-year-old has arranged private talks with United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio as part of efforts to shore up support amid growing calls for his resignation.

Infantino has come under intense scrutiny following the collapse of the FFE proposal, with critics arguing that the plan represented a major governance failure and risked placing commercial interests above the long-term future of the sport.
