TECH FEATURE: AI In the Newsroom: A Smart Assistant, Not A Substitute

Artificial intelligence is changing the way newsrooms work, but it should never replace a journalist’s instincts, judgement or storytelling. The best reporting still begins with curiosity, careful fact-checking and conversations with real people. AI simply helps to make those tasks faster.

A reporter can use AI to organise interview notes, summarise lengthy reports, suggest headlines, transcribe audio and generate ideas for follow-up questions. That means less time spent on repetitive tasks and more time chasing stories that matter. The final decisions, however, should always rest with the journalist.

The most effective newsrooms see AI as an assistant, not an author. Readers trust stories because they believe a human has verified the facts, understood the context and exercised sound judgement. No technology can replace those responsibilities.
