The Zamfara State Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, through the Agro-Climate Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes, ACReSAL, project, has commenced sensitisation on erosion control in six communities in Gusau metropolis.
The communities targeted are Masallacin Kanoma, Hayin Buba, Alfijir Bread, Bayan Jifatu, Hayin Danhausa and Gadar Baga.
The sensitisation was held at Masallacin Kanoma and Gadar Baga on Thursday and Friday respectively.
The State Project Coordinator of ACReSAL, Nasiruddeen Bello, represented by Akilu Mayana, said the six communities fall within the Bulka Corridor erosion control project area.
He said the exercise was aimed at creating awareness on the dangers of floods, erosion and associated health hazards.
According to him, the state government, through the ACReSAL project, has planned to construct 5.6 kilometres of erosion control structures from Masallacin Kanoma to Gadar Baga.
Bello urged residents of the affected communities to support the state government to ensure the success of the project.
“Participation of every stakeholder is important and crucial to the success and sustainability of this project,” he said.
Participants at the sensitisation included members of the affected communities, community and religious leaders, civil society organisations, the media, and officials from relevant ministries and agencies.
