Benue State Police Command has arrested seven suspected armed robbers terrorising the state and recovered several items.
The police public relations officer, Catherine Anene who disclosed this in a statement to review their achievements during the festive period explained that on 28/12/2022 at about 0130hrs information was received that armed robbers operating along Adikpo-Jato-Aka Road, attacked and robbed road users of their belongings.
She said during a police investigation one Aondongu Iorlamen Abigwa Bebatso and five others were arrested in connection with the crime.
According to her, “items recovered from them include; one locally made single barrel gun, a head mask, a military camouflage and one motorcycle stolen from the same robbery scene.”
The police spokesperson also informed that on the 31/12/2022 at about 0200hrs a distress call was received that five suspected kidnappers invaded a compound at Tse-kpum in Vandeikya local government area to kidnap Mr Terzungwe.
“Upon arrival of the police, the suspects fled into a nearby forest where one of them was eventually arrested while his gang members escaped,” she added.
She said the suspect confessed to have been sent by an enemy of the victim to kidnap him for ransom, adding that investigation is ongoing to arrest suspects at large.
In another development the PPRO averred that on the 02/01/2023 at about 1100hrs, officers of Safer Highway patrol on stop and search duty at Ogene junction in Otukpo-Ugbokolo road, intercepted one Aliyu Danazumi with goods suspected to be stolen.
“On the spot search of his belongings led to the recovery of ten phones, a cutlass, a sack containing new clothes and shoes,” he said.
She said the suspect confessed to have broken into shops with other gang members while traders travelled for Christmas to steal the goods, saying, investigation is ongoing to identify the shop owner and arrest suspects at large.
The spokesperson quoted the commissioner of police, Benue State Command, Wale Abass as commending the dedication of officers to work during the Yuletide and urged them to keep up the good work as more is expected of them during the election period.
