The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, has celebrated Team Nigeria’s impressive performance at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, where the country emerged as the highest-ranked African nation.

Montgomery hosted a reception in Abuja on Friday for Nigerian athletes, coaches and officials who participated in the Games, which featured about 3,000 athletes from 74 nations and territories.

According to the British High Commission, Nigeria finished among the overall top 10 and was the only African country in the ranking, securing 24 medals comprising 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze.

Speaking at the event, Montgomery commended the athletes for their talent, dedication and resilience, describing their performance as a reflection of Nigeria’s sporting potential.

He also highlighted the role of sport in strengthening relations between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, saying the reception reflected the longstanding Commonwealth ties and shared values between both countries.

The event was attended by athletes, coaches, officials of the National Sports Commission and the Nigerian Olympic Committee, as well as representatives of the British High Commission.

Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, described the team’s performance as a source of national pride and pledged continued government support to help athletes build on their achievements in future international competitions.

Head of Communications at the British High Commission in Abuja, Aseosa Uwagboe, said the reception was organised to honour the Nigerian contingent, adding that sport remained an important bridge between the two countries through shared values of determination, respect and excellence.
