The University of Calabar has raised the alarm over an illegal Distance Learning Centre in Port Harcourt, accused of fraudulently using its name and logo to deceive unsuspecting members of the public.

A circular issued by the Registrar of the University of Calabar, Dr. (Mrs.) Chukwuka Icha, said the illegal centre, operating under the name “Bori Business School” and located at the “NUJ Press Centre, Moscow Road, Port Harcourt,” claimed to be running “Diploma, B.Sc., B.A., PGD and Ph.D. programmes” for UNICAL.

In a circular, UC/REG/CIR/138, dated August 6, 2026, sighted by LEADERSHIP, UNICAL stated that the business school was not affiliated in any way with the University of Calabar and had never had any form of affiliation with the institution.

The circular recalled that the university discontinued all satellite campuses in 2003 in compliance with a directive from the Federal Ministry of Education through the National Universities Commission (NUC), banning such operations.

The Registrar stressed that “the University has no satellite campus, coordinator or agent authorised to admit students or operate academic programmes on its behalf anywhere outside its approved campuses,” warning that anyone dealing with the Port Harcourt centre did so at their own risk.

Consequently, the management advised prospective students and parents to be vigilant and avoid falling victim to fraudsters parading themselves as representatives of UNICAL.

The circular stressed that the institution “completely dissociates itself from the activities of the illegal centre.”

The university further called on the Rivers State Ministry of Education to urgently investigate the activities of Bori Business School and ensure its closure for unlawfully impersonating UNICAL and bringing its reputation into disrepute.

The circular also urged the public to verify all admission and programme information only through the university’s official channels.
