Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde, has assured residents of the state that he will not assume the role of a political godfather who would interfere with governance or hinder his successor from providing effective leadership after the 2027 general elections.

Makinde gave the assurance while hosting members of the Muslim community during a Hijrah 1448 luncheon held at the Banquet Hall, Government House, Agodi, Ibadan yesterday.

The governor stated that, having served the people of Oyo State for eight years, he would ensure a smooth transition process that allows his successor to develop and implement policies in line with the aspirations and yearnings of the people.

He maintained that leadership should be centred on service to humanity rather than control, urging citizens, particularly members of the Muslim community, to hold political aspirants accountable and assess them based on competence, character and commitment to public service rather than ethnic, religious or other primordial considerations.

According to him, governance should remain focused on improving the lives of the people, adding that public office holders must always place the interest of citizens above personal or political interests.

Makinde further pledged that the remaining period of his administration would be dedicated to consolidating the achievements recorded so far and delivering more impactful projects and programmes for the benefit of residents across the state.

He stressed that his government would continue to make decisions that promote development, peace and prosperity in Oyo State until the expiration of his tenure, while appreciating the people for the confidence and support they have given his administration over the last eight years.

The governor also expressed gratitude to the Muslim community for their partnership and contributions towards the growth and stability of the state, assuring that his administration would continue to uphold inclusiveness and fairness in governance.
