Nigeria’s Super Falcons will have another opportunity to keep their hopes of reaching the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup alive when they face arch-rivals South Africa’s Banyana Banyana in a high-stakes Inter-Confederation Play-off qualifier in Casablanca on Thursday.

The Falcons’ quarter-final exit from the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco has left them with a narrower route to next year’s global showpiece in Brazil, with victory over South Africa essential to advancing to the Inter-Confederation Play-off Tournament.

The encounter at the Moulay Rachid Stadium, scheduled for 9pm, promises another fierce chapter in one of African women’s football’s biggest rivalries.

It is one year and 22 days since the two sides last met, when Nigeria edged South Africa 2-1 in a dramatic Women’s AFCON semi-final, also in Casablanca. Michelle Alozie scored a spectacular stoppage-time winner after both sides had earlier converted penalties.

Banyana Banyana have, however, enjoyed success against the Falcons in three editions of the Women’s AFCON — 2012, 2018 and 2022. Overall, though, South Africa have recorded only four competitive victories against Nigeria, while the 10-time African champions have won 17 of their other meetings.

Thursday’s clash carries even greater significance, with both teams desperate to secure progress towards the Inter-Confederation Play-off Tournament after falling short of the AFCON semi-finals.

The rivalry has produced several memorable encounters in recent years. Before last year’s AFCON semi-final, the teams battled across two Olympic qualifying matches in 2024, with Rasheedat Ajibade’s penalty in Abuja proving decisive over the two legs.

South Africa also defeated Nigeria 2-1 in their opening match of the 2022 Women’s AFCON in Morocco.
Ajibade is expected to lead the Falcons once again, while Banyana will rely on the attacking threat of experienced forward Thembi Kgatlana.

Nigeria head coach Justin Madugu will also be looking for a more clinical performance from his forwards after the Falcons created several chances but failed to find the net against Cameroon’s Indomitable Lionesses in Sunday’s quarter-final.

With no room for another missed opportunity, the Falcons will need to convert their chances if they are to overcome their familiar rivals and keep their World Cup dream alive.

Falcons, Banyana Head-to-Head

Nigeria and South Africa have met 27 times in competitive and friendly matches, with the Falcons holding the historical advantage.

The most recent meetings have been closely contested, with Nigeria winning 2-1 at last year’s Women’s AFCON, following a 1-0 Olympic qualifying victory in Abuja and a goalless draw in the return leg in South Africa in 2024.

Thursday’s encounter could add another significant chapter to a rivalry that has consistently produced high-stakes and fiercely contested matches.
