Smith Cautions Arsenal Against Osimhen Pursuit

Arsenal legend Alan Smith has issued a stark warning to his former club regarding the potential acquisition of Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen, arguing that the Nigerian international is neither a tactical match for Mikel Arteta’s system nor a financially prudent investment for the Premier League side.

Osimhen, currently plying his trade in Turkey following a high-profile loan move from Napoli, has emerged as a primary transfer target for several European powerhouses ahead of the summer window.

However, in an interview with Gooners News, Smith urged the Arsenal hierarchy to thoroughly scrutinize the deal before committing significant funds to secure the Super Eagles talisman, cautioning against the “huge investment” required to bring the forward to the Emirates.

Smith expressed particular concern over the disruptive effect such a marquee signing could have on the existing squad morale and team chemistry, which Arteta has meticulously cultivated over the past two seasons.

While acknowledging that Arsenal unequivocally require a central striker to lead the line, the former Gunners striker emphasized that the identity of that player must align with the club’s precise positional philosophy.

“I think Arsenal do need a centre-forward; it’s about getting the right one,” Smith stated, underscoring that goalscoring pedigree alone is insufficient to guarantee a seamless integration into Arteta’s demanding system.

Addressing the swirling transfer rumors, Smith acknowledged Osimhen’s prolific finishing ability but hinted that his nomadic career trajectory—specifically the surprising move from Napoli to Galatasaray—raises pertinent questions about his suitability for the Premier League’s relentless intensity.

“When Osimhen went from Napoli to Galatasaray, I think most people probably thought, ‘Oh, his chance to go to the Premier League may be over there.’ But he can score goals,” Smith conceded.

Nevertheless, he maintained that Arteta’s tactical framework demands a specific skill set—particularly in build-up play and defensive pressing—that Osimhen might not fully provide, despite his physical attributes and aerial prowess.

Concluding his assessment, Smith framed the potential pursuit as a critical litmus test for Arsenal’s recruitment strategy, suggesting that investing heavily in the wrong profile could destabilize the delicate balance Arteta has achieved.

“I don’t know how much truth there is in that,” Smith added regarding the rumors linking Osimhen to north London, “but it’ll be an interesting one to see how it develops, if it does develop.” With Arsenal expected to prioritize a striker signing this summer, Smith’s remarks serve as a pointed reminder that financial outlay must be matched by tactical symbiosis.
