The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Gombe State University branch, has shelved its planned industrial action after the state government and university management made fresh commitments to address outstanding salary-related and welfare issues.

The union reached the decision at an emergency congress in Gombe on Friday night, resolving to allow the government and management until the end of October 2026 to fulfil the commitments contained in agreements reached with the union.

ASUU said the suspension was a window for the authorities to implement the new salary structure and settle outstanding arrears and other entitlements owed to university staff.

However, in a resolution signed by the branch chairman, Dr Mustapha Shehu Muhammad, and Secretary, Dr Aliyu Umar Shelleng, the union warned that it would revive the strike if the commitments are not honoured within the stipulated period..

The development followed a 14-day ultimatum earlier issued by ASUU over unresolved welfare issues, including arrears arising from the 2019 N30,000 minimum wage, 25 and 35 per cent wage awards, non-implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage and outstanding Earned Academic Allowances.

The chairperson said the branch had been directed by ASUU’s National Executive Council to commence a total and indefinite strike should the ultimatum expire without satisfactory action.

The state government also directed the processing of outstanding CATA arrears, while asking the university to progressively address other financial obligations.
