The newly affirmed candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for Kano North Senatorial District, Nasiru Sule Garo, has declared that he would perform better than the incumbent senator, Barau Jibrin, if elected in the 2027 general elections.
Garo, a former member of the House of Representatives, made the declaration during an interview shortly after his affirmation as the NDC senatorial candidate for the district.
He said his 12 years in the House of Representatives and three years as a commissioner had equipped him with the experience needed to provide effective representation to the people of Kano North.
Garo said, unlike what he described as the weak representation currently being provided, he would use his position in the Senate to speak out on issues affecting his constituents, scrutinise government policies and hold the executive accountable.
He said he would particularly prioritise insecurity, economic hardship and policies that negatively affect residents of the senatorial district.
“When you look at qualification, I have been a member of the House of Representatives for 12 years, and apart from that, I have been a commissioner in this government for three years. So there is no qualification better than what I already have.
“We are ready and willing. People have tested us. They have seen the kind of people we are, and we have better policies. Therefore, we are a better choice, and we know that we will do better than what this senator is doing for the good people of Kano North,” he stated.
He said his approach would be to ensure that Kano North had a strong voice at the National Assembly, rather than supporting government policies without adequately questioning their impact on the people.
On insecurity, Garo said he would use his legislative position to demand greater action from the Federal Government and security agencies, particularly as communities in Kano North were increasingly affected by insecurity from neighbouring Katsina State.
“As a legislator, my job is to make sure that I am checkmating the activities of the executive. So when I get into office as a senator, I will have a voice, and we are not going to keep quiet,” he said.
Garo said he would also push for policies that would make life easier for Nigerians, particularly in the areas of economic empowerment, infrastructure and access to government services.
Garo’s affirmation followed the NDC’s decision to substitute Engineer Sunusi Danbatta with him as its substantive candidate for the 2027 Kano North senatorial election. He was affirmed at a ceremony held at the party’s senatorial office in Bichi last Friday by the state chairman, Usaini Mai Riga, who was represented by the party’s Zonal Vice Chairman, Bello Yandadi.
