A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, Okai Austin, has called on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory(FCT), Nyesom Wike, to caution the Chairman of Kuje Area Council, Samuel Shekwolo, over alleged divisive comments capable of escalating political tensions in the area.

Okai, a human rights activist, made the appeal in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja, following a viral video in which Shekwolo was allegedly heard threatening to go after critics on social media.

The council chairman was also accused of telling residents who do not support the ruling All Progressives Congress to leave the area council.

Reacting to the alleged remarks, Okai described them as “uncalled for” and dangerous, warning that inflammatory statements by public officials could heighten tensions and potentially lead to violence if left unchecked.

“The Federal Capital Territory is home to all Nigerians, as well as the international community. We must not allow anyone to escalate tensions,” he said.

Okai urged Shekwolo to exercise restraint and embrace peace, tolerance and inclusiveness in the administration of the council, irrespective of residents’ political affiliations.

He said public officials, particularly grassroots leaders, had a responsibility to ensure that their statements did not deepen divisions or create unnecessary tension within their communities.

“Being a local government chairman does not mean one should lack administrative civility. Kuje is known for peace and tolerance, and the leadership must reflect that,” Okai said.

The ADC chieftain further appealed to relevant authorities to examine the comments attributed to the council chairman and ensure that elected and appointed officials remain committed to maintaining peace and order in the FCT.

He stressed that political differences should not be allowed to undermine peaceful coexistence among residents of the territory.

Okai also encouraged Shekwolo to emulate political leaders who have promoted dialogue and peaceful engagement, citing former FCT Senator Philip Aduda as an example.

He appealed to Wike and other relevant authorities to intervene before the situation escalates, stressing that responsible leadership requires restraint, tolerance and respect for divergent political opinions.
