A 20-year-old man is in police custody in Anambra State after he allegedly murdered his 56-year-old father with a machete in Abatete, Idemili North Local Government Area.
The suspect, identified as Pascal Ogbogu, was arrested in the early hours of Tuesday, 26 August 2026, shortly after the incident.
According to the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, preliminary findings show that Ogbogu attacked his father on the evening of Monday, 25 August 2026, and fled the scene.
“Following a distress report, police operatives from Eziowelle Police Division, with the assistance of family members and the Abatete Vigilante, mobilised to the scene. They found the lifeless body of the deceased in a pool of blood with a deep machete wound to the throat,” Ikenga said.
The body has been evacuated to the mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
Ikenga added that Ogbogu’s arrest was made possible by timely information from community members and coordinated efforts by the police and local vigilantes.
The Commissioner of Police commended the family, community members, police operatives and vigilante personnel for their prompt response. He said effective community participation and partnership with security agencies remain critical to protecting lives and property.
While commiserating with the bereaved family, the Commissioner directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
“The investigation will be conducted professionally, thoroughly and in accordance with the law. The suspect will face due process at the conclusion of the investigation,” the CP assured.
