Nigerian media entrepreneur and EbonyLife Group CEO, Mo Abudu, has taken her place among some of the biggest names in global cinema at the inaugural Lumière Summit in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, France.

The high-level gathering, co-chaired by French President Emmanuel Macron and South Korean President Lee Jae-myung, brought together leading filmmakers, government officials, studio executives, creators and cultural institutions from around the world to discuss the future of the moving-image industry.

For Abudu, however, the September 7 gathering became more than a professional engagement.

Sharing photographs and reflections from the event, she expressed appreciation to Macron for the invitation and revealed that she was seated next to Hollywood superstar George Clooney during the summit.

“We had a wonderful conversation,” she wrote.

The Nigerian creative entrepreneur also participated in two panel discussions.

The first focused on creating opportunities for young people in the creative industries, while her second panel brought her together with filmmaker Anthony Russo, director of the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, and Angela Russo-Ostot, Chief Creative Officer.

But perhaps the most striking moment came during lunch.

Abudu revealed that she was seated at a table with President Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron, alongside some of the most influential figures in the global entertainment industry.

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos sat to her left, NBCUniversal Studio Group Chairman Donna Langley to her right, while Sony Pictures Entertainment Chairman Tom Rothman sat directly opposite her.

Her guest list of conversations did not end there.

Abudu said she also interacted with Thierry Frémaux, director of the Cannes Film Festival; Miky Lee, executive producer of the Oscar-winning Parasite; acclaimed filmmaker Abderrahmane Sissako; and Osahon Akpata, CEO of CANEX Creations.

The gathering came at a pivotal moment for the global film industry, with discussions centred on artificial intelligence, financing, changing audience habits, streaming, the creator economy and the future of cinema.

President Macron used the summit to warn against allowing artificial intelligence to replace human creativity, while France and South Korea announced a €1 billion initiative to support independent filmmakers and strengthen the global film ecosystem.

For Nigeria, Abudu’s presence at such a gathering is significant.

It places an African creative-industry voice within a room where some of the world’s most powerful conversations about the future of storytelling, film and entertainment are taking place.

From Lagos to the French Riviera, the EbonyLife founder continues to occupy a space where African storytelling is increasingly part of the global creative conversation.

And as Abudu put it, it was “a day I will remember for a very long time.”
