The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, is set to depart Nigeria for the United States and Canada as he begins a North American tour ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Sowore is expected to travel through Washington, D.C., during the tour, which will also provide an opportunity for him to reunite with his immediate family after spending an extended period in Nigeria.

The AAC presidential candidate has in recent months faced a series of arrests, detentions and prosecutions linked to his political activities and public statements, involving the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services.

Most recently, the DSS announced that it had directed its prosecutors to pause the cybercrime case against Sowore over his description of President Bola Tinubu as a criminal.

The development followed months of legal battles involving Sowore and his legal team.

During his stay in North America, Sowore is expected to meet Nigerians in the diaspora, supporters, activists and other stakeholders as the AAC steps up preparations for the 2027 elections.

He is expected to return to Nigeria before the end of September to resume campaign activities ahead of the presidential contest.

According to the statement, his temporary absence from Nigeria will not affect the campaign, as the #Sowore2027 movement is expected to continue its activities across the country.

Sowore will also participate virtually in campaign engagements while abroad and attend relevant meetings with Nigerians in the diaspora across the United States and Canada.

The AAC said its campaign would continue to push for what it described as revolutionary transformation, equal rights and justice, rather than a return to the existing political establishment.
