Armed bandits have raided Girekau Village in Kebbe Local Government in Sokoto State, leaving residents in fear following reported cases of abduction and killing.
The Sokoto State Police Command said it had launched an investigation into the incident and deployed additional personnel to the affected area to restore normalcy.
Speaking exclusively with the Public Relations Officer for Sokoto State Command, DSP Ahmed Rufai said the attackers stormed the village but met an empty community as residents had already been evacuated from the place.
He said during the raid, the bandits abducted one person, identified as an INEC employee from Tambuwa Local Government Area, while one resident was killed.
“Security agencies have been notified and are said to be on the ground. As of this morning, no further report has been received from the area.”
A resident, Munir Auwal, however, said the bandits stormed the community in the early hours, shooting sporadically before whisking away an unspecified number of residents.
A police source who pleaded anonymity confirmed that operatives are currently on the ground conducting search and rescue operations, while efforts are ongoing to track the fleeing attackers.
“We are aware of the incident, and our men have been deployed to the area. An investigation is ongoing to ascertain the exact number of those abducted and killed. We urge residents to remain calm and provide useful information to security agencies,” the source stated.
