Nigeria’s effort to prepare students for careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics continues to face a persistent challenge: many public schools lack the laboratories and equipment needed to turn classroom theory into practical knowledge. At Government Secondary School, Kuje, in the Federal Capital Territory, a new industry-supported education initiative is seeking to close that gap by giving students regular access to functional science facilities.
The five-laboratory complex, developed by TotalEnergies Upstream Nigeria Limited, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited and their co-venturers, is intended to strengthen practical learning and expand opportunities for students in Kuje and neighbouring communities. The project was delivered in partnership with CNOOC, SAPETRO and Meren.
The the facility is part of an education support programme by the companies and is designed to help students move beyond textbook-based instruction.
By conducting experiments and interacting directly with laboratory equipment, learners are expected to gain a clearer understanding of scientific principles and develop stronger problem-solving, analytical and technical skills.
The managing director, chief executive officer and country chair of TotalEnergies Upstream Nigeria Limited, Matthieu Bouyer, said the project was designed to improve the standard of science education available to students in Kuje and surrounding communities.
Bouyer, who was represented at the event by the acting general managing director, Corporate Social Responsibility, TUPNI, Moyosola Areola, said the complex would enhance teaching and learning outcomes while helping students develop the knowledge and practical skills required for future careers.
He said the initiative was aligned with Goal 4 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, which focuses on inclusive and equitable quality education and the promotion of lifelong learning opportunities.
According to him, improving access to quality education remained an important part of TotalEnergies’ contribution to community development in Nigeria.
The Kuje project forms part of a wider education investment portfolio by TotalEnergies in the country. The company has donated geoscience resources to six Nigerian universities: the University of Lagos, the Federal University of Technology Akure, the University of Ilorin, the University of Ibadan, the University of Port Harcourt and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
Bouyer also referred to the company’s scholarship programmes, including the National Merit Scholarship Scheme, which has benefited more than 30,000 students since its introduction in 2003.
The TotalEnergies International Scholarship, jointly sponsored with NNPC and its partners, has supported more than 170 Nigerians pursuing postgraduate studies outside the country. The Community Scholarship Scheme, which dates back to 1973, has also benefited hundreds of students in host communities across Nigeria.
Another initiative cited was the Empowering The Teachers fellowship, launched in 2011 to give African academics in science and engineering immersive, semester-long exposure to advanced teaching methodologies, mentorship and coursework at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States.
Together, the programmes reflect a broader approach to education support that includes infrastructure, scholarships, university resources and teacher development.
NNPC urges students to take ownership
Also speaking at the event, the acting chief upstream investment officer of NNPC Upstream Investment Management Services, Olanrewaju Igadan, described the project as a demonstration of resilience, partnership and a shared commitment to the transformative power of education.
Igadan said NNPC’s commitment to sustainable development extended beyond its core oil and gas operations to investments in people, communities and institutions.
He commended TUPNI for its partnership throughout the project and acknowledged the contributions of consultants, contractors, community leaders, school authorities, teachers and students who helped bring the facility to completion.
Turning to the students, Igadan urged them to see the laboratories as an opportunity to explore, experiment and develop their interest in STEM disciplines.
The facility, he stressed, “belongs to you.”
He encouraged the students to use the laboratories to deepen their knowledge, ignite their curiosity and pursue excellence in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
His appeal placed the students at the centre of the project. While the sponsoring companies and their partners provided the infrastructure and equipment, the value of the investment will ultimately depend on how consistently the facilities are used and how much students gain from them.
Igadan also urged the school management and host community to take ownership of the complex and ensure that it was properly maintained.
Protecting and maintaining public infrastructure, he said, would ensure that the investment continued to serve students for years to come.
