The Labour Party has distanced itself from Abayomi Arabambi over a credentials law suits involving the party 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, stressing that he is no longer a member and cannot institute any action on behalf of the party.

This follows media reports alleging that Arabambi, described as an “LP chieftain”, dragged the West African Examinations Council (NYSC) and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka to court over Mr. Peter Obi’s academic records.

In a statement issued on Monday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Asogwa, said it initially ignored the story on social media but had to react after it appeared in mainstream media.

Asogwa cited headlines in the news, which read “LP chieftain sues WAEC, UNN, NYSC over Obi’s credentials” and “2027: Obi’s credentials under probe as LP chieftain sues WAEC, UNN, NYSC”.

Labour Party said Arabambi was among 25 members suspended by its National Executive Council on March 18, 2026 for alleged anti-party activities.

“The NEC decision was later ratified by the National Convention, the party’s highest decision-making organ, on April 28, 2026. Since then, no organ of the party has reversed the action.” he stated

It further said Arabambi had ceased to be a member long before the suit was filed, and any claim to represent Labour Party is “unauthorised and, prima facie, amounts to impersonation.”

The party also said its lawyers are reviewing the matter and may petition law enforcement agencies.

The party emphasized that the release only clarifies Arabambi’s status and does not speak to the merits of the case against Mr. Peter Obi, who is not a member of the Labour Party.
