Benue State government has commenced the arrest and prosecution of individuals and groups involved in the wanton destruction of public utilities and billboards across the state.

Describing the act as reckless and criminal conduct, the government said it had resulted to the loss of valuable public and private investments, which would no longer be tolerated under any guise.

The commissioner for Information and Orientation, Chief Solomon Iorpev, said security agencies had been directed to intensify surveillance and to apprehend, without delay, any person or group caught in the dastardly acts.

Iorpev urged the public to report anyone engaging in such vandalism to the nearest security agency, as protecting public infrastructure is a collective responsibility.

According to Iorpev, “Several suspects have been arrested and are in police custody, and will be arraigned in court shortly to answer for their actions.

“The government wishes to state, in the clearest terms, that anyone found culpable of vandalising, defacing, or destroying public utilities, billboards, or any other state or private infrastructure will be made to face the full weight of the law. There will be no sacred cows, and no amount of political, social, or personal affiliation will shield any offender from prosecution,” the commissioner warned.

The statement added, “The Government therefore serves this final and unequivocal warning to those with such destructive tendencies to desist immediately. The Benue State government will not fold its arms while public and private property is destroyed by irresponsible elements. Anyone caught, henceforth, will be dealt with decisively and squarely, in accordance with the law.

The Benue State Government remains resolute in its commitment to protecting lives, property, and public infrastructure across the State,” Iorpev said.
