FRSC Warns Motorists Against Fake Traffic Offence SMS, Website

Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has warned motorists and members of the public against fraudulent text messages claiming that recipients have been recorded for new road traffic offences.

The corps, in an alert issued yesterday, said the scam messages were being circulated via mobile devices and social media platforms, directing unsuspecting motorists to a fake website that impersonates the FRSC’s digital identity.

It specifically identified “frscgov.top/ng” as one of the fraudulent links being circulated, stressing that the website had no affiliation with the agency.

The corps said its official website is www.frsc.gov.ng, while its services are provided through authorised FRSC digital platforms and established communication channels.

The fraudulent messages, according to FRSC, typically create a sense of urgency by informing recipients that a new traffic offence had been recorded against them and asking them to click a link to review the alleged offence.

The corps warned that such links could be designed to harvest personal and financial information from unsuspecting victims.

It therefore advised motorists not to click on suspicious links or disclose banking information, passwords, card details, driver’s licence information, vehicle registration details or other personal data in response to unsolicited messages.

The agency urged anyone who receives such messages to preserve the evidence, avoid further engagement with the sender and report the matter through appropriate channels.

“For the avoidance of doubt, motorists are advised to verify any alleged traffic offence directly through official FRSC channels and not through links contained in unsolicited messages,” the corps said.

It reminded members of the public that its national toll-free line is 122, and that motorists can also verify information on the official FRSC website.

The corps warned those behind the scheme against using its name, identity, insignia and digital platforms to deceive or defraud members of the public.

It said it would work with relevant law enforcement and cybersecurity authorities to pursue appropriate action against individuals responsible for impersonating the Corps and deploying counterfeit digital platforms.

The corps marshal, Shehu Mohammed, directed that the public be adequately sensitised about the fraudulent scheme and urged motorists to exercise caution in their online engagements.

Mohammed said the corps remained committed to protecting the integrity of its digital systems and ensuring that technology deployed for road safety administration was not exploited by fraudsters to deceive or extort Nigerians.

He urged members of the public to adopt the message: “Stop. Verify. Report.”

The corps marshal advised Nigerians to verify any message purportedly originating from the FRSC through the agency’s official website and established communication channels before taking action.

The FRSC also appealed to members of the public to share the warning widely to prevent unsuspecting motorists from falling victim to the scam.
