United States law enforcement authorities have charged a 61-year-old man, Joseph Lynch, over the 1993 rape and murder of a 10-year-old boy, ending a 33-year cold case investigation.

The Prince George’s County Police Department announced on Friday, September 18, 2026, that Lynch was formally charged with the murder and sexual assault of George “Junior” Burdynski, who disappeared from Brentwood, Maryland, in May 1993.

Although extensive searches by local and federal law enforcement failed to locate the victim’s body at the time, police cold case investigators received a major breakthrough in May 2026.

Investigators interviewed a former Brentwood resident who disclosed that he was present in a building with Lynch and Burdynski on the day the victim vanished.

The witness told police that Lynch forced him to participate in the sexual assault before the child was murdered.

The break in the investigation occurred while police were examining separate, recent sexual abuse allegations against Lynch involving two teenagers between 2007 and 2014.

Lynch, who was already in police custody facing those charges, is the sole suspect charged in connection with Burdynski’s disappearance and murder.
