As a preliminary remark, nothing is wrong with Mrs Margaret Obi, wife of the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), owning and flaunting a luxury Hermès handbag that was alleged to cost between N230 million and N250 million. It is her choice, and if she can afford it, why should she be worried about snide comments from those who think she should enjoy her wealth in secret and not display the obscene opulence of the rich and powerful?

Mrs Obi is not the wife of a farmer from my village. She has set her sights on becoming Nigeria’s First Lady. Her looks smell of wealth. Mrs Obi’s image is different from her husband’s, whose frugality stinks to high heavens. Until now, she had carefully managed her image by lying low, in line with her husband’s low-profile, spartan lifestyle. Not anymore.  Social media platforms are abuzz with a picture of her bag, setting cyberspace alight.

Confused Resonance

In the hyperpolarised landscape of Nigerian politics, messaging and optics are often as critical as policy. For those familiar with the former Anambra State governor’s lifestyle, Obi’s image is anchored in a doctrine of aggressive fiscal discipline and anti-ostentation, defined by calculated frugality. For those in the know, this highly curated public image faced a sudden sociopolitical litmus test when his wife, Margaret, was spotted at an airport carrying what online critics identified as a luxury bag. Data boys working for Obi’s political opponents quickly calculated the value of the rare, exotic piece, a Hermès Kelly 35 in shiny Malachite crocodile leather, placing its estimated retail value at roughly N230 million to N250 million at prevailing parallel market exchange rates.

Double-Face  Politics

The uproar over the bag’s cost reflects the double face politicians often adopt to woo the poor for electoral victory. Given the Obi family’s wealth, they could easily afford the most exclusive luxury goods the global fashion industry has to offer without ever touching a single kobo of public funds.

Sadly, in Nigeria, the richer one becomes, the more money one needs to survive the relentless competition within the club of the wealthy. Some Nigerians have expressed shock at this sheer display of wealth by Obi’s wife, money to survive the cutthroat competition among the wealthy elite who are supposed to provide support to her husband if he is eventually elected as president in 2027. Next year’s polls would provide a platform for the prosecution of desperation never seen in the history of Nigeria’s democracy.  As the drumbeats of the polls sound louder, Obi should have known that allowing a spouse to display such a luxury bay amounts to splashing mud on an image built and anchored on the pillars of frugality
