NPFL Matchday 4: Ikorodu, Katsina, Ranchers Face Early-Season Tests

The 2026/27 Nigeria Premier Football League enters its fourth matchday today with three fixtures scheduled as clubs look to strengthen their early-season positions and build momentum in the opening weeks of the campaign.

All three matches are scheduled for 4pm, with Ikorodu City hosting Barau, Katsina United taking on Niger Tornadoes, while Ranchers Bees welcome Bendel Insurance. 

The opening weeks have already produced plenty of goals and surprises, with 19 goals recorded across seven completed Matchday 3 fixtures, while Barau have emerged as one of the early talking points after an unbeaten start. 

Ikorodu City face Barau test in Lagos

Ikorodu City will look to make home advantage count when Barau visit the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan.

The Lagos side have made an encouraging start to the campaign, beginning with a 3-1 victory over Ranchers Bees before drawing 2-2 away to Abia Warriors last weekend.

That result extended their unbeaten run to two matches and gave them another opportunity to build momentum in front of their home supporters.

Barau, however, arrive with considerable confidence.

The newcomers have made an unbeaten start to their top-flight campaign and produced another impressive result on Matchday 3, defeating Ranchers Bees 3-1 in Kano. They had earlier beaten Nasarawa United 3-1 before holding Kun Khalifat to a goalless draw.

Barau have also demonstrated an attacking threat on home soil, scoring six goals in their opening two home fixtures. 

Ikorodu City will therefore have to be alert defensively against a side that has adapted quickly to the demands of the NPFL.

The Lagos hosts will also be encouraged by their previous meeting with Ranchers Bees, whom they defeated 3-1 on the opening weekend. 

Katsina United seek response against Tornadoes

Katsina United face Niger Tornadoes in a northern encounter that could provide both sides with an opportunity to improve their early-season fortunes.

Katsina’s campaign has been mixed so far. They began with a 1-1 draw against defending champions Rangers before suffering a 3-0 defeat away to Kwara United on Matchday 3. 

They will now return to home territory determined to turn their fortunes around.

Niger Tornadoes, meanwhile, have also endured an inconsistent opening. They defeated Enyimba 2-1 on the opening weekend but were beaten 3-2 by Kano Pillars before drawing 1-1 with Plateau United last weekend. 

The Minna-based side will therefore be looking for a more disciplined performance as they attempt to add another three points to their tally.

With both teams seeking greater consistency, the contest could be decided by which side handles the pressure better in a fixture where home advantage could prove significant.

Ranchers Bees face tough Insurance challenge

Ranchers Bees have endured a difficult spell after their promising opening-day performance, and they face another stern examination when Bendel Insurance arrive.

Ranchers opened their campaign with a 3-1 defeat by Ikorodu City before recovering emphatically with a 4-0 victory over Abia Warriors.

They were brought back down to earth on Matchday 3, however, suffering a 3-1 defeat against Barau. 

Bendel Insurance will arrive with their own confidence boosted by a four-goal display against Kun Khalifat on Matchday 3.

The Benin-based side defeated Warri Wolves 2-1 in their opener, lost 1-0 to Nasarawa United and then responded with a 4-2 victory over Kun Khalifat. 

Their ability to find the net makes this an intriguing contest for Ranchers, who will need to tighten up at the back while attempting to reproduce the attacking sharpness that produced their four-goal win over Abia Warriors.

Three fixtures, plenty at stake

With only three matchdays completed, the NPFL table remains at an early stage, but Saturday’s fixtures offer an opportunity for several clubs to establish stronger momentum.

Ikorodu City v Barau pits an ambitious Lagos side against one of the early unbeaten challengers, while Katsina United v Niger Tornadoes promises a competitive northern battle.

At the same time, Ranchers Bees v Bendel Insurance brings together two sides capable of producing goals but still searching for consistency.

The three encounters will set the tone for the rest of Matchday 4 before the remaining fixtures are played on Sunday.
