37 Miners’ Deaths: Abbas Demands Accountability, Transparency in Investigation

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has called for transparency and accountability in the ongoing investigations into the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

The Speaker made the call in a statement issued on Monday by his Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs, Musa Abdullahi Krishi.

Abbas described the deaths as “painful, unfortunate, and avoidable,” while expressing condolences to the Niger State Government and the families of the victims.

He said the multiple investigations into the incident must be conducted thoroughly and transparently to address public concerns and calm tensions surrounding the deaths.

According to him, following President Bola Tinubu’s directive for an investigation, the outcome should not only establish the circumstances surrounding the incident but also recommend measures to prevent a recurrence.

The Speaker said the probe should address issues including prison congestion, operational guidelines, the rights of suspects and the welfare of persons in custody.

Abbas also commended Niger State governor Umar Mohammed Bago for his prompt intervention to prevent a breakdown of law and order following protests over the incident.

He similarly praised the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, and the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, for their swift responses.

The Speaker prayed for the repose of the victims’ souls and expressed sympathy to their families.
