Trump Unveils New Name For AI, Says ‘Super Intelligence’ Sounds Better

US President Donald Trump has announced that the United States will begin using the term “super intelligence” instead of “artificial intelligence” in official government documents.

Trump made the announcement on Tuesday while addressing the 81st United Nations General Assembly(UNGA) in New York, arguing that the word “artificial” wrongly suggests that the technology is not genuine.

“The use of the word artificial makes intelligence fake. It makes it sound fake, and it is not fake. It’s actually amazing, but we have to be careful,” Trump said.

According to the president, the change would apply to US government documents, while expressing hope that other countries would adopt the terminology.

“From this point forward, all United States documents and hopefully the world’s will be changed to use the much more accurate term super, as opposed to artificial,” he said.

“So it’s super intelligence. In other words, welcome to the new world of super intelligence — SI. Let’s see if that goes. It sounds much better.”

Trump also opposed calls for tighter international regulation of AI, saying the US would prioritise advancing the technology rather than imposing restrictions that could slow its development.

He acknowledged that emerging technologies often create new challenges but argued that the potential benefits of advanced AI were greater than the risks cited by its critics.

“These are the same people that are now saying that AI is going to kill us all, that robots are going to attack us, and that everything is going to be a total disaster,” he said.

Trump compared the concerns surrounding AI with previous warnings about climate change and stressed the importance of maintaining US leadership in the technology.

“Whoever wins SI, whoever wins super intelligence, wins,” he said.

“That’s the group that wins. And we’re leading now over China by a lot and everyone else, and we’re going to keep it that way.”

The US president said his administration would not “stifle” the development of the technology, describing its potential impact as greater than that of the Industrial Revolution or the internet.

“We will only encourage super intelligence. We’re going to encourage it, not rein it in,” Trump said.

He added that the US government would continue to monitor the technology through the Department of Justice and other law-enforcement agencies where necessary.

“The United States leads the world in super intelligence and will continue to do so safely and responsibly,” Trump said.

However, “superintelligence” already has an established meaning in AI research. The term generally refers to a hypothetical or advanced form of intelligence that surpasses human capabilities across a broad range of cognitive tasks.

Trump’s proposed terminology therefore differs from the way “superintelligence” is commonly used within the AI research community.
