ICPC Begins Operational Review Of REA To Strengthen Accountability

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has commenced a comprehensive review of the operations of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) as part of efforts to strengthen accountability and transparency in the agency.

The review followed an invitation by the REA to the commission to examine its systems and identify areas for improvement.

The agency disclosed this in a statement yesterday, saying the exercise was aimed at ensuring that its internal frameworks remained accountable, transparent and fit for purpose as its programmes, partnerships and investments expanded.

Speaking during the ICPC’s visit to the REA headquarters, the managing director Abba Aliyu called for closer collaboration between the commission and the agency’s Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit.

“Transparency is strongest when an organisation is willing to open its systems to external scrutiny, identify operational gaps and actively implement corrective measures,” Aliyu said.

He said the partnership with the ICPC and the ACTU would be maintained as a continuous framework for evaluating and strengthening the systems supporting rural electrification nationwide.

The development comes after the REA emerged as the leading agency in the power sector in the ICPC’s 2025 Ethics and Integrity Compliance Ranking and Performance Outlook.

The ongoing review is expected to support the agency’s efforts to improve institutional integrity and ensure that resources committed to rural electrification are managed transparently.
